Carbon Lab Participates at the Blue Careers Fair 2019

The ‘Blue Career Fair 2019’ took place on Thursday, 5th of December 2019 at the Cyprus University of Technology (Tasos Papadopoulos Building – Auditorium 1) in Limassol, on Wednesday 11th of December 2019 at the University of Cyprus (University Campus, Building 07, Auditorium 10) in Nicosia and on Friday 13th of December 2019 at the House of Arts and Literature (Ground floor) in Larnaca.

The event was organized by the Maritime Institute of Eastern Mediterranean and the Blue Career Center of Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, with co–organizers the Cyprus University of Technology and the University of Cyprus with the support of the Europe Direct Information Centre (Larnaca) and the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.

Distinguished professionals and academics from the Marine and Maritime industry presented to the audience of more than 250 secondary school students and career counselors their different disciplines by delivering presentations where they highlighted the specific qualifications required, the duties and responsibilities that each discipline entails, as well as the future employment and career development opportunities. More specifically, seven schools attended the event in Limassol (Lyceum Agiou Antoniou, Lyceum Agiou Nikolaou, Lyceum Linopetras, Lyceum Apostolon Petrou & Pavlou, Technical School A’, Lyceum Giannaki Talioti Geroskipou and Lyceum Polemiou), four in Nicosia (Lyceum Kykkos A’, Lyceum Agiou Georgiou Lakatameias, Lyceum Archiepiskopou Makariou III and Technical School B’) and five in Larnaca (Lyceum Agiou Georgiou, Lyceum Makariou III, Pagkyprio Lyceum, Technical School of Larnaca and Lyceum Paralimniou).Below, in more detail are the specific topics delivered by each speaker for the three days.

1. 5th of December 2019: Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol

The first presentation began with the profession of Naval Architect and Marine Engineer which was delivered by Mr. Christis Angelides, president of Cyprus Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Association. He highlighted that this is a high demand profession all over the world as well as in Cyprus. Then, Dr. Savvas Loizou, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at the Cyprus University of Technology presented the topic of Robotics in Maritime Industry and explained to students that robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science and he was also referred to the future employment opportunities on this area. The third presentation was related to the profession of Merchant Marine Officer which was delivered by Mrs. Iro Gidakou, president of the Association of Merchant Marine Officers. Based on her personal experience she was focused on the working conditions, the qualifications required and the positive and negative aspects of this career. The topic on the Career in the Cruise Tourism sector was delivered by Mr. Demetris Charalambous, General Manager at the Petronav Ship Management Ltd. Mr. Charalambous presented the requirements and the available jobs for this career and based on his working experience on board he highlighted that is difficult and demanding career but on the same time is an experience you will never forget. After a 20 – minute break, Mrs. Martha Foufopoulou, Ιchthyologist and Farm Manager Associate at the Kimagro Fishfarming Ltd. presented the career in the Aquaculture sector. She described a typical day at work including the pros and cons of this profession. On behalf of the Professor Dr.  Toula Onoufriou, Dr. Constantine Michailides, Lecturer of the Department of Civil
Engineering and Geomatics at the Cyprus University of Technology, presented the last topic of the event related to the Career in the Offshore Oil and Gas sector. He presented in general the industry and focused on the current and future employment opportunities. In the end of the event the interested parties had the opportunity to speak in person with the speakers and ask any further questions and share concerns.

2. 11th of December: University of Cyprus, Nicosia

During this event, six different topics related to blue career were presented. Mr. Yiannis Pastellas, Senior Sales Manager at Safebridge company was highlighted the Professions in the area of Digital Training in Shipping and more specific he explained the different departments of his company and what are the available job opportunities following this career path. Next presentation was about the Profession of Geoscientist in the Oil and Gas sector which was delivered by Mr. Efthymios Efthymiou, Senior Geophysicist at the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company Ltd. He was presented the different specialties and the principles of geophysics to end up with the possible employers and specific qualification required. The third presentation was related to the profession of Marine Biologist which was delivered by Dr. Niki Chartosia, Special Teaching Staff of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus. Dr. Chartosia, explained to the students what is a marine biologist and she presents the different career paths one marine biologist can follow, the available job options in Cyprus and the studies they have to follow. Before the break, Mr. Alexandros Josephides, Deputy Director General at Cyprus Shipping Chamber presented the Professions in Shipping Companies and he focused on the different departments. He was also pointed out that this is a profession in demand and he gave information for the available study options. The next presentation was about the Career in the Maritime Archaeology presented by Dr. Stella Demesticha, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archeology at the University of Cyprus who explained the profession of Maritime Archeologist through a typical day at the field and she focused on the possible areas of employment and the necessary qualifications. The last presentation of the event regarding the Career in the Offshore Oil and Gas sector was delivered by Mr. Nicodemos Nicodemou, Chartered Mechanical Engineer, at the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company Ltd. He presented the key sectors of the hydrocarbon industry and examples of available professions.

3.  13th of December: House of Arts and Literature, Larnaca

Mrs. Anna Pittalis, Commercial Manager and Head of Chartering at Intergaz Chartering company, she delivered the first presentation of the event about the Career in the Chartering Department. She focused on the duties and responsibilities for someone who work at the chartering department and the job opportunities and career development of this area. The second presentation was delivered by Mr. Angelos Ktoris, General Secretary at Cyprus Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Association and Researcher at Maritime Institute of Eastern Mediterranean. He covered the topic of the profession of Naval Architect and Marine Engineer and explained to students what is this profession and the qualifications required as well as the positive and negative aspects of this career. Following this presentation, Mr. Chrysostomos Efthymiou, Marine Officer at the Cyprus Shipping Chamber presented the Professions in Shipping Companies and he focused on the different departments and available options. Also he gave information for the available study options in Cyprus and abroad. The next topic was delivered by Mrs. Martha Foufopoulou, Ιchthyologist and Farm Manager Associate at the Kimagro Fishfarming Ltd. who talked about the Career in the Aquaculture sector. There was a 20 – minute break where students had the opportunity to speak in person with the speakers and ask any further questions or concerns. Then, Capt. Paris Demetriou, Marine and Safety Superintendent and Crewing Manager at the Petronav Shipmanagement Ltd. was delivered the presentation for the Profession of Merchant Marine Officer. He focused on the working conditions, the qualifications required and the positive and negative aspects of this career. Finally, the Career in the Offshore Oil and Gas sector was presented by Dr. Constantinos Hadjistassou, Assistant Professor of the Department of Engineering at the University of Nicosia. Mr. Hadjistassou focused on the studies on engineering and more specific of petroleum engineers and the needs of the industry and the future employment opportunities.
