Research Directions in Geophysics & the Triple Feed-Back Loop
Three key research initiatives in Geophysics Technology are presented. They form the backbone of game changing research in the oil & gas arena. The first one is centered on the concept of automation in the seismic value chain and offers a series of distinct methodologies/ algorithms related to the acquisition, processing & interpretation of 3D seismic data. The second initiative aims to improve dramatically the fidelity and vertical resolution of the seismic data by bringing geophysics closer to the reservoir. Burying sources and sensors at depth is a new radical notion that is expected to dramatically reduce the near-surface effect, lower surface-wave noise and deliver high-fidelity geophysical data. The challenges are many: new sensors/sources are required, efficient & cost-effective drilling practices are sought and novel processing algorithms have to be developed. The rewards are enormous: improved recovery rates and enhanced reservoir management. The third research initiative is related to multi-physics and involves the introduction of Advanced Electromagnetic and Gravity technologies in order to complement seismic for subsalt exploration, near-surface characterization, and reservoir monitoring. Finally, the concept of triple feed-back loop is introduced, an inter-related pull-push model linking the roles of government, private sector & academia. It is postulated that it can serve as the basis of a cohesive approach for integration leading to a systematic methodology of energy production/consumption, knowledge creation and economic prosperity. The talk will conclude with an overview of energy developments in the Cypriot EEZ in the context of the third licensing round.
Speaker’s bio:
Presently, Panos Kelamis is the Chief Executive Officer of the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company, the national oil company of the Republic of Cyprus. In May 2016, he retired as the Chief Technologist in Geophysics for the EXPEC Advanced Research Center, the Upstream Research Center of Saudi Aramco, the largest oil producer in the world, where he led the identification, evaluation and implementation of new technologies and processes. Dr. Kelamis has over 35 years of petroleum exploration and field development experience with emphasis in applied research and management in the energy sector. He has been a member of Saudi Aramco management for more than 13 years. He has worked with and managed professional geoscientists & engineers at major oil & gas companies and geophysical contractors in the US, Canada and Saudi Arabia. Recognized for his leadership/management skills, strong technical background, and practical application of leading edge technology, Dr. Kelamis is a well-known author, speaker, organizer and participant in international oil & gas conferences. He has over 150 papers & presentations in scientific journals & conferences word-wide and received numerous awards.
